How to start a Diwali hamper business: what to put in, what to charge, how to pack, and where to sell.
Expand key insights
- CAIT says mainline retail, mostly non-corporate and traditional markets, carried 85 percent of Diwali 2025 trade. Our read is that buyers lean on sellers they already know, so an online store works best as the place to take and confirm orders.
- Gift items were 7 percent of CAIT's Diwali 2025 trade, which works out to roughly ₹42,000 crore by simple arithmetic, a large pool for a category a home seller can enter with modest stock.
- FSSAI raised the registration ceiling from ₹12 lakh to ₹1.5 crore on 1 April 2026, so older advice quoting ₹12 lakh is out of date.
- Thermocol decoration and plastic film around sweet boxes are on India's prohibited list, which rules out some of the most common hamper packing habits.
- A 30 percent markup is not a 30 percent margin. Pricing from the selling price protects the margin you meant to earn.
- Festival stock loses its value after Diwali, so pre-orders with a firm cut-off date reduce the biggest risk in this business.

| How do I price a hamper? | Divide total cost by (1 minus your margin minus the payment fee), instead of adding a markup, then check the result in a markup calculator. |
If you are working out how to start a Diwali hamper business this year, the calendar is the first constraint. Diwali falls on Sunday, 8 November 2026, so the time to source, pack, and deliver is short. A Diwali hamper business is still a realistic start, because a hamper is assembled from products that already exist. You are selling a curated, well-packed gift, and the work is choosing contents, pricing them, and presenting them well. CAIT put India's Diwali 2025 trade at ₹6.05 lakh crore, and gift items made up 7 percent of it.
Starting a Diwali hamper business well comes down to four decisions made in order: what goes in the hamper, what it costs you, how it is packed, and where it is sold. This guide covers how to start a Diwali hamper business in that order, including how to price Diwali hampers without eroding your margin, packaging that follows India's current rules, and what to check on food licensing before you take your first order.
1. Is a Diwali Hamper Business Worth It?
Demand is real. CAIT's survey covered 60 distribution centres, including Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, and found record trade, though it is a traders' body and the figures are estimates. Whether a hamper business is worth it for you depends on your own margin, and no industry average can tell you that. Work it out from two questions. Can you buy the contents at a cost that leaves room for margin after packaging, shipping, and payment fees? And can you pack and deliver the number of hampers you plan to sell before 8 November?

2. What Goes in a Diwali Hamper
Build each hamper around one hero item and a few supporting ones, then add a note. The hero item sets the price band, so choose that first. Most Diwali gifting business ideas fall into four product types.
Dry Fruit Gift Boxes
If you plan to sell dry fruit gift boxes online, decide whether to resell sealed branded packs or repack loose stock. Repacking makes you the packer, which brings labelling duties. FSSAI's labelling regulations require the FSSAI logo with licence number and date declarations on pre-packaged food.
Candles and Diyas
To sell candles online in India during Diwali, keep scented candles in their own compartment so the fragrance does not reach the food. Diyas are fragile, so cushion each one and allow for breakage in your costing. If you want to sell diyas online, photograph them lit, since that is how buyers imagine them at home.
Homemade Sweets
Selling homemade Diwali sweets online carries the most risk, because sweets have a short shelf life and fall under food rules. Keep delivery local and fast, and date every box. Selling Diwali sweets online across India needs courier timing and packaging you have tested before the festival rush.
3. Sourcing: Diwali Gift Items Wholesale
Wholesale pricing is where a hamper's margin is made or lost. Decide the hamper formula before you buy, then source each item against it.
Ask for samples
Ask for samples before committing to quantity, and open them as a customer would.
Compare landed cost
Compare landed cost, which is the item price plus transport and an allowance for breakage.
Check food packs for an FSSAI licence number
For food items, check that the supplier's pack shows an FSSAI licence number.
Confirm delivery dates in writing
Confirm delivery dates in writing, since a late shipment cannot be recovered after Dhanteras on 6 November.

4. Pricing: Diwali Hamper Pricing and Profit Margin
Diwali hamper pricing starts with a full cost, not just the contents. Add the items, packaging, your labour, shipping, and an allowance for breakage. Then price from the selling price. A markup adds a percentage to cost, but your margin is measured against the price, and payment fees come out of the price too. The formula is: price equals total cost divided by one minus your target margin minus the payment fee.
The formula
Price = total cost ÷ (1 − target margin − payment fee)
The table below is an illustration with made-up round numbers, not market data. It assumes a total cost of ₹650 (items ₹420, packaging ₹80, labour ₹50, shipping ₹100) and a 2 percent payment fee. Use your gateway's published rate for the real figure.
| Method | Calculation | Selling price | Margin after the fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30 percent markup on cost | ₹650 × 1.30 | ₹845 | about 21 percent |
| 30 percent target margin | ₹650 ÷ (1 − 0.30 − 0.02) | about ₹956 | about 30 percent |
The markup method looks like a 30 percent return but delivers about 21 percent once the fee is paid. Run your own numbers in a markup calculator, and keep your Diwali hamper profit margin as a figure you calculated, not one you copied.
5. Packaging: Diwali Hamper Packaging and Gift Packaging Ideas
Packaging is the most winnable part of this business, because a hamper is judged on how it looks when the box opens. It also has rules. India has prohibited thermocol decoration and wrapping or packing films around sweet boxes since 1 July 2022, so check each component with your supplier.
| Layer | Job | Check |
|---|---|---|
| Outer box | Protect in transit and carry your brand | Kraft or rigid box, no thermocol inserts |
| Filler | Stop items moving | Shredded or crinkle paper in place of thermocol |
| Inner containers | Keep food and non-food apart | Food-grade containers; candles in their own compartment |
| Sweet box wrap | Present the food | No plastic film around the box |
| Label | Meet FSSAI rules | Logo and licence number, veg or non-veg mark, dates |
| Card | Replace the gift receipt | List contents and shelf lives, add a reorder link |
Good Diwali gift packaging ideas share one trait: the container becomes part of the gift. Jute baskets, brass or steel bowls, cloth potlis, and tins all keep their value after the sweets are gone. A handwritten note and a tied ribbon cost little and photograph well, which matters because most orders start with a picture on WhatsApp or Instagram. Photograph every hamper closed and open, plus one top-down shot.
Match the Packaging to the Hamper Type
Match the packaging to the hamper type:
Dry fruit hampers
a kraft box with compartments or a cloth potli keeps pieces from sliding and looks handmade.
Candle and diya hampers
a rigid box with paper filler and a divider between wax and anything edible.
Sweet hampers
a food-grade inner box inside a rigid outer box, delivered within your own city.
Premium hampers
a reusable brass or steel bowl or a wooden crate, priced to cover the container.
Before you print anything, build one prototype, drop it from table height, and ship it to a friend in another city. Weigh the packed hamper too, since courier cost depends on weight and you need that number for your pricing.
6. Starting From Home
A Diwali hamper business from home needs a clean packing surface, storage that keeps food away from candles, and a realistic count of how many hampers you can pack in a day. Multiply that by the days left to find your capacity, and stop taking orders when it is full. Diwali business ideas from home work only when the dispatch calendar is planned backward from the date you want hampers delivered.
For Diwali gift business names, pick something easy to spell in a WhatsApp message, check that the Instagram handle and domain are free, and search the trademark register before you print labels.

8. Basics to Check Before Your First Sale
This is general information, not legal advice, so have an FSSAI consultant or accountant confirm your situation.
FSSAI
food businesses need registration or a licence. FSSAI's order of 13 March 2026 sets registration up to ₹1.5 crore of turnover, up from a ₹12 lakh ceiling. Apply through the official FoSCoS portal.
Labelling
the regulations define an "assorted pack", so ask your consultant how a hamper of mixed items should be labelled.
GST
registration depends on turnover and how you sell, so check the official GST portal.
Plastic rules
audit packaging against the prohibited list above.
