Key Insights
How to make your website visible to Meta Muse, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google, Copilot, and Claude in 2026.
Expand key insights
- AI chatbots send a sliver of referral traffic, 0.4 percent in Statcounter's September 2026 data, so judge AI visibility by calls, bookings, and "how did you hear about us" answers rather than sessions alone.
- Search crawlers and training crawlers are separate switches at OpenAI, Perplexity, Meta, and Anthropic. A robots.txt that blocks "AI bots" wholesale can remove a business from answers it wanted to appear in.
- ChatGPT-User, Perplexity-User, and Meta-ExternalFetcher can bypass robots.txt for user-requested fetches, according to OpenAI, Perplexity, and Meta, so robots.txt is a policy for crawlers and not a lock on private pages.
- Meta says Muse's browser agent reads an accessibility tree, which makes a labeled, keyboard-friendly booking form as useful to agents as it is to people using screen readers.
- Google says its AI features need no special markup, files, or rewriting, so for Google the work is ordinary SEO and accurate local details.
- Cloudflare is used by 26.3 percent of websites and has blocked AI crawlers by default for new domains since July 2025, so the setting that hides a site from AI may not live in the site's own robots.txt.
AI Visibility at a Glance
If you want to make your website visible to Meta Muse, ChatGPT, or Gemini, start with a check most owners have never done: can those systems read the site at all? Meta launched Muse, a personal AI agent that opens a browser and fills out forms for its user, on September 8, 2026. It joins ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google's AI features, and Copilot as one more assistant that decides which businesses to recommend or book.
How to make your website visible to ChatGPT and how to make it visible to Meta Muse overlap far more than they differ. Making your website visible to AI assistants comes down to seven jobs, covered below, followed by a breakdown of how each assistant finds and cites a business. Most of the work is unglamorous. It starts with letting the right crawlers in, then writing facts in plain text so a machine can quote them.
What AI Visibility Is Worth in 2026
AI assistants send little traffic, yet they shape who gets called. Statcounter's September 2026 data put search at 91 percent of referrals and AI chatbots at 0.4 percent.
The influence shows up before the click. Pew found people clicked a traditional result in 8 percent of visits when Google showed an AI summary, against 15 percent when it did not, and only 1 percent clicked a link inside the summary itself.
Our read is that AI works as a recommendation channel. The goal is to be the business an answer names, then to count calls instead of sessions. Our guides on how to show up in AI results and SEO and inbound marketing cover the wider picture.
The 7 Ways to Make Your Website Visible to AI Assistants
These seven steps apply to every assistant covered later. Work through them in order, since the first one decides whether the rest matter.
Let the Right AI Crawlers In
Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt and look for blanket "block AI" rules. Search crawlers decide whether you can appear in answers: OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot, and meta-webindexer. Training crawlers such as GPTBot and meta-externalagent are a separate choice, and blocking them is legitimate. OpenAI, Perplexity, and Meta each say changes can take about 24 hours to apply.

User-agent: PerplexityBot

User-agent: Claude-SearchBot

User-agent: meta-webindexer

Then check the layer above robots.txt. Perplexity's documentation walks through allowing its bots in a Cloudflare or AWS firewall by pairing the user agent with its published IP ranges, and OpenAI recommends allowing its published IP ranges too. Our post on why a business doesn't show up on Google covers the same crawl-access checks for search.
of websites use Cloudflare, which denies AI crawlers by default on new domains. Check its bot settings before assuming robots.txt is the only gate.
Put the Facts in Plain Page Text
Assistants quote text. Services, price ranges, hours, service area, phone number, and booking steps belong in the page's HTML, not only in images, PDFs, or widgets that load later. Microsoft's Bing team says clear headings, tables, and FAQ sections help AI systems reference key information accurately. Give each service its own page so a question like "does a plumber in Tampa work Sundays" has one place to be answered. Our list of small business website mistakes flags the usual gaps.
Add Schema With Realistic Expectations
Add LocalBusiness or Organization markup with your name, address, phone, hours, and service area, and make sure it matches the visible text, as Google advises. Google also says structured data isn't required for generative AI search and no special schema.org markup exists for it. Treat schema as hygiene that removes ambiguity and supports rich results, not as a switch. FAQ markup is optional for the same reason.
Make Booking and Contact Forms Agent-Friendly
Muse and Google's browser agents act on a page, not just read it. Google's web.dev team recommends semantic HTML such as button and a elements, label tags tied to inputs with the for attribute, no transparent overlays on controls, and a stable layout. WebMCP, a proposed standard that tells agents what a page can do, is still in development, and small sites can skip it for now.
Run your own booking flow with only the keyboard, then open the accessibility tree in DevTools. A control with no name or role is one an agent cannot use.
Publish Real FAQ Answers
Write the questions customers ask on the phone, then answer each in two or three sentences that stand alone: price range, turnaround, areas covered, what to bring. Google's guide describes non-commodity content as first-hand, expert takes that go beyond common knowledge, and says generic lists restate what is already online. Add one detail a competitor could not write, such as your price floor or a job you decline. Our guide to answer engine optimization covers the format.
Keep Business Details Consistent and Earn Real Mentions
Complete your Google Business Profile and register with Bing Places for Business. Microsoft says Bing Places helps keep address, hours, and contact details current and eligible for AI-generated responses, and Google says Business Profiles help local businesses appear in AI responses. Then earn mentions from customer reviews and local coverage. Google's guide says seeking inauthentic mentions is less helpful than it looks. Start with our Google Business Profile audit checklist and our reasons a profile alone isn't enough.
Check Whether AI Mentions You
Ask each assistant what a customer would, such as "best [service] in [city]", in a fresh session on three different days, and record which businesses appear. Answers vary. Then use first-party tools:
- Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report, launched February 10, 2026, shows citations and grounding queries, which are the phrases the AI used to retrieve your pages, not what the user typed.
- Google's guide points to a Generative AI performance report in Search Console.
- Server logs show visits from OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot.

Each assistant uses a different crawler to build its index and a different fetcher when a user asks it to open a page. Knowing which is which tells you what to allow.
"All other" is the remainder of 100 percent after the three named shares.
ChatGPT
Statcounter credits ChatGPT with 80.48 percent of AI chatbot referrals, and OpenAI reported 900 million weekly users in February 2026. If you only test one assistant, test this one.
How ChatGPT Cites Businesses
ChatGPT search answers from an index that OAI-SearchBot builds, then links to the pages it drew on. Allowing OAI-SearchBot makes your pages eligible for ChatGPT search, though it promises no mention. A site that opts out can still appear as a plain link, and ChatGPT-User visits happen when a person asks ChatGPT to open a page. Because OpenAI keeps search and training as separate settings, blocking GPTBot has no effect on whether you are cited.
How to Make Your Website Visible to ChatGPT
- Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and in your firewall, including OpenAI's published IP ranges.
- Answer "how much" and "do you serve my area" in the first two sentences of each service page.
- Keep your Bing listing accurate, since ChatGPT search draws on web results.
- Look for OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User in your server logs to confirm visits.
Perplexity
Perplexity says PerplexityBot surfaces and links websites in its results and is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models. Statcounter shows it at 5.85 percent of AI chatbot referrals.
How Perplexity Cites Businesses
Perplexity builds answers from pages PerplexityBot has crawled and links to the pages it uses in a response. Perplexity-User may visit a page in real time to answer a question and link to it. The benefit for a small business is a linked citation that a reader can click straight through.
How to Make Your Website Visible to AI Search on Perplexity
- Allow PerplexityBot in robots.txt and permit its published IP ranges in your firewall. A rule that blocks unknown bots can block it without any warning.
- Write pages that settle one question completely, with the answer in the opening sentences.
- Use tables for prices and service areas so a single cited passage carries the full fact.
Google Gemini, AI Overviews, and AI Mode
Pew found 18 percent of Google searches in March 2025 produced an AI summary, which makes Google the AI surface most local customers will see.
How Google's AI Features Cite Businesses
Google's guide says its AI features use retrieval from the Search index plus query fan-out, where the model runs related searches for the user. A page can be pulled in for a sub-question it answers well, even if it does not rank for the main query. Requirements are modest: indexed, snippet-eligible, and included in the Search generative AI features setting in Search Console.
How to Make Your Website Visible to AI Overviews and Gemini
- Check that no nosnippet or max-snippet rule limits your text.
- Answer the likely sub-questions on your service pages: hours, cost range, area covered, and reviews.
- Complete your Google Business Profile, since Google says profiles help local businesses appear in AI responses.
- Watch the Generative AI performance report in Search Console.
Our local SEO checklist and complete local SEO guide cover the setup.
Microsoft Copilot
Copilot is small in referrals at 1.79 percent, but it is the only assistant with a free, first-party citation report.
How Copilot Cites Businesses
Copilot answers from the Bing index and cites the pages it grounds an answer in. The AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools shows total citations, cited pages, and grounding queries, so a verified account is the entry point.
How to Make Your Website Visible to Copilot
- Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools and check the AI Performance report monthly.
- Register with Bing Places for Business so address, hours, and contact details stay current.
- Use IndexNow, which Microsoft recommends to notify participating search engines when content changes.
Meta Muse and Meta AI
Meta says Muse runs on a secure virtual machine with its own browser and can fill out forms for its user. TechCrunch reports Muse launched for U.S. users and can use a service through its browser when no API is available, so your normal booking form is the interface.
How Meta Muse and Meta AI Cite and Use Businesses
Meta has two roles here. For Meta AI search, Meta says allowing Meta-WebIndexer helps it cite and link to your content. For Muse, the agent acts on the page: its browser sub-agent sees an accessibility tree snapshot, not the raw DOM. Meta-ExternalFetcher, which Meta says supports agentic features such as helping AI complete tasks on websites for users, may bypass robots.txt.
How to Make Your Website Visible to Meta Muse
- Allow meta-webindexer in robots.txt so Meta AI can cite and link to you.
- Give every form field a label and every action a real button element.
- Remove pop-ups and overlays that cover the booking form.
- Keep prices and availability in text so Muse has facts to relay when it cannot book.
Meta has published no Muse-specific crawler or site-owner guide, so nobody can promise Muse visibility. A site that works for a person using a screen reader is the safest preparation. Keep your profiles consistent with your site; see our guides on Facebook marketing for local business and Instagram vs a website.
Claude
Anthropic runs Claude-SearchBot for search visibility and Claude-User for user-requested fetches. Anthropic says all its bots honor robots.txt, which makes Claude the most predictable of the six to control.
How Claude Cites Businesses
When Claude searches the web for a user, it can draw on pages Claude-SearchBot is allowed to reach and link to them as sources. Because every Anthropic bot follows robots.txt, a blanket AI block removes you from Claude's answers more reliably than from any other assistant's.
How to Make Your Website Visible to AI on Claude
- Allow Claude-SearchBot in robots.txt; a "block all AI" line will keep you out.
- Allow Claude-User too if you want Claude to open your page when a user asks it to.
- Apply the same plain-text facts and FAQ answers from steps 2 and 5.
